Suspected South Sudan rebels on Sunday morning ambushed a Uganda-bound bus killing a Kenyan national identified only as Collins.
The ‘‘Friendship’’ company bus registration UAM 126V was ambushed between Moli and Kerepi villages, along the Juba- Nimule Highway.
The Kampala-bound bus had 11 passengers on board.
A Uganda—Eveline Kisembo was injured—shot in the head. Another Ugandan and a South Sudanese was also injured. The extent of their injury is uknown but all are receiving treatment at a medical facility in Juba.
Another Uganda, Mercy Awori 21 from Tororo district is being admitted in Adjumani district.
The driver of the bus and unidentified passenger were reportedly abducted by the suspected rebels and there whereabouts remains unknown.
The 4th Division commander Brig Muhanga Kayanja confirmed the Sunday morning attack.
Brig Kayanja said preliminary intelligence indicates that the attackers could be fighters of the deposed South Sudan former Vice President Riek Machar who he said are entering Eastern Equatorial which neighbours Uganda.
The 4th Division commander said the rebels are being commandeered by Brig Martin Kenyi, a former soldier in the Sudan’s People’s Liberation Army [SPLA].
The attack comes barely two months after Ugandan government had successfully evacuated over 36,000 people from south Sudan, majority being Ugandans who were trapped in renewed fights that erupted between loyalist of President Salva Kiir and Mr Machar’s in July this year.
During the evacuationy, unknown armed people ambushed UPDF truck along Moli Adru village in Magwi county injuring three soldiers.
The Ugandan government had also warned its citizens against travelling to South Sudan owing to the insecurity that lurks over the Nimule-Juba Highway.
