A 34-year-old teacher of Purongo Secondary School in Nwoya who admitted to murdering his wife has told a judge that he misses her.
Lawrence Otim, killed his wife after a fight broke out between the two of them nearly three years ago. He suspected his wife of having sex with another man on his marital bed.
Lawrence Otim appeared on Monday before Gulu resident High Court judge, Justice Vincent Okwanga. He told the judge that he did not have intentions of killing his wife.
The suspect and his late wife have four biological children.
Gulu High court Judge, Vincent Okwanga directed that the charge sheet against Otim be downgraded from murder to manslaughter.
Court heard that on October 29, 2013, Otim came back home in the night and attacked his wife, in the process, he stabbed her several times using a blade like weapon.
A postmortem report conducted by Dr Onen Olwedo which was tendered in court indicated that Otim stabbed Adong on the chest, private part and the head.
Dr Olwedo attributed the cause of death to multiple tissues damage and hematoma.
Through his lawyer, Henry Komakech Kilama, Otim asked court to give him a lighter sentence so that he can go and take care of his four children and four dependents.
Komakech argued that Otim is remorseful and did not waste court’s time by pleading guilty to the charge. The lawyer asked for a three- year jail term for his client considering that he had already spent two years and ten months in jail.
But prosecution asked for Otim to be jailed for 15 years.
In his judgment, based on the suspects own plea, Justice Okwanga sentenced Otim to six years in jail.
