Police has abandoned one of its brand-new buses along Gulu Avenue, one of the busiest streets in Gulu town after it developed a mechanical problem.
The bus registration number UP 54 85 was making a return journey to Kampala from Kitgum district which hosted the 38th Tarehe Sita and presided over by President Museveni when it broke down a stone throw away from Gulu Central Police Station.
The occupants of the bus continued on with their journey to Kampala in a lorry.
The bus, a Higar, blue in color was parked by the roadside on Feb 9 and has been there since then cordoned off by a tape similar to ones police use at crime scenes
The road were the bus is parked is undergoing major rehabilitation work, narrowing the road. On Monday police made an unsuccessful attempt to tow the bus.
Gulu Avenue leads to major institutions such as Gulu High Court, Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, office of the Resident District Commissioner, Aswa Regional Police Headquarters, Gulu Central Police, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and is also the same road that leads to Kitgum district, Gulu Airport and the 4th Division barracks.
Aswa region police spokesman Jimmy Patrick Okema declined to comment when contacted saying he was busy with other assignments.
The police bus is a similar one to the one which was driven by a police driver to his village in Mityana without authorization leading to reports that the bus had been stolen.
