Francis Dawa Matenga, the Gulu Chief Magistrate on Tuesday sentenced a 25-year-old man to seven years for attempting to murder his grandmother.

Brain Okello, a resident of Ongako Sub –County in Omoro district was captured on a video furiously beating his grandmother Lucy Anek, 82.

Court heard that on April 12,2020, Okello flogged Anek from her home in Amilobo village, Patuda Parish in Ongako Sub –County in Omoro district.

Appearing in court on Tuesday morning, Okello pleaded guilty to the offense.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate of Gulu High Court said he gave Okello a lighter sentence because he pleaded guilty and did not waste court’s time.

According to Matenga, the jail sentence is to enable Okello to reflect on his life and come out a useful citizen of the country.

Jerome Angina, the State Prosecutor told our reporter in an interview that Okello’s 7-year sentence serves as lesson to the community, saying cases of the young battering the elderly had become common.
