Suspected armed Karimojong cattle rustlers have raided Mora East village in Paimol Sub County in Agago District in early hours of Tuesday morning, stealing 54 head of cattle.
The rustlers numbering about eight struck the area at about 12am, according to security sources.
Linos Ngompek, the Agago Resident District Commissioner(RDC) however said vigilantees backed by LDU personnel recovered 51 head of cattle after a hot pursuit.
Ngompek said the cattle thieves fired live bullets in the air before escaping with dozens of cattle towards Kotido district, in the Karamoja sub region.
This is the first time since the beginning of the year that armed Karimojong warriors have stolen a huge number of cattle after government deployed over 400 Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel in Acholi districts neigbouring Karamoja to combat rampant rustling.
By press time, no single suspect had been arrested over the cattle raid incident.
He said the 3rd Division Army Headquarters in Moroto has been alerted over the cattle raid.
