Police have blocked a move by Gulu Municipality to display fireworks as it ushers in its city status.
The municipal authorities headed by Peter Okwera Onen had planned to display fireworks at exactly midnight at six different points in Gulu municipality to welcome the new city status.
The points include Lacor Trading Centre, Layibi Roundabout, Laliya, Bungatira and Unyama which are main entries into the municipal centre.
However, police have issued a statement cautioning the municipal authorities against the move noting that it was illegal.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson warned that the Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola has not sanctioned the display of the fireworks and anyone found conducting it will be arrested and charged accordingly.
Okema add that fireworks display will likely attract crowds, leading to violations of social distancing rules by the Ministry of health to curb Covid-19.
The organizer Peter Okwera Onen said he was saddened by the action of the police to block the fireworks display as the organisers had put in place measures to avoid gatherings.
