Police in Lamwo district on Saturday recovered a car belonging to the International Red Cross alleged to have been stolen from South Sudan.

The Land Cruiser vehicle registration number CD 2821 was recovered at around 10 am on Saturday at Aweno Olwiyo along the Lamwo- South Sudan border. The Uganda police had been tipped off about the car theft, police said, and waited for the car at the border point.

According to the Aswa region police spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema the driver of the vehicle had attempted to pass through roadblocks set by police on the Uganda side of the border.

Police fired shots in the air, and the driver of the stolen International Red Cross vehicle took off, abandoning the car, Okema said.

“We expect the Red Cross Official to follow the procedures in recovering the vehicle,’’ the Okema added.

In 2014, police in Lamwo recovered two Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles stolen from the United Nations Mission (UNAMID) in Darfur, Southern Sudan.

The recovery comes barely two days after the police patrol unit in Nwoya also recovered a stolen Hipsum Car registration number UAX 376M from Murchison park after an hour of exchange of gun fire with armed thugs. The thugs fled and abandoned the vehicle.
