Kilak County Member of Parliament Gilbert Olanya has given Amuru local government leaders 21 days to refund 12 million shillings they allegedly raised from auctioning 1,391 bags of charcoal impounded from dealers in the district in September this year.
The charcoal was impounded from Amuru, Pabbo and Lamogi sub-counties in an operation conducted by the district forest officials and local leaders following a resolution passed by the Amuru to curb charcoal trade in the district.
In a heated meeting on December 26 with the charcoal dealers in Adara village Labala Parish in Pabbo Sub County, Olanya said it was not proper for the district to impound the charcoal since it was benefitting the local community.
Olanya and the Charcoal dealers unanimously set eight resolutions among which was that the district authority should refund the money within three weeks.
“In case they fail to honor the 21 days ultimatum as the members of parliaments from Amuru district we shall mobilize the affected charcoal dealers together with their families to pitch camp in the district to,’’ Olanya said.
“Some of the families [in charcoal trade] cannot even raise money for their daily needs which entirely relied on the charcoal business,” Olanya said.
He urged the district to stop the district from setting up road blocks to impound charcoal.
Michael Lakony the LC5 chairman of Amuru however said Olanya was misleading people saying Amuru local government is acting within the law.
