A 40-year-old Ugandan truck driver who tested positive for COVID -19 was on Friday evening admitted at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.
The patient was intercepted from Elegu Border Post at Elegu Town Council in Amuru district before being transferred for isolation at the regional hospital.
According to a statement issued by Gulu District COVID -19 Taskforce, the Ugandan truck driver who is a resident of Nakasozi Zone in Kampala travelled to Juba in South Sudan of April 27th, the same day that his samples were taken for testing.
“Our medical team is doing everything possible to handle this case effectively and he is in a stable condition,’’ said Ojara Martin Mapenduzi, the Gulu District Chairman said in a statement posted on Facebook.
“We call for calm and strongly advise out people to rely on authentic information from the Health Ministry and the Taskforce,” Mapenduzi said.
Dr. Pask Apio, the Deputy Director of Gulu Regional Referral Hospital who doubles as the Head of Case Management in the Gulu District COVID -19 Taskforce revealed in a WhatsApp message that the patient is stable.
Dr Apio added that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like face masks are still a big challenge for the hospital.
“We do not have enough masks. We need more urgently.”
Uganda’s COVID -19 cases have risen to 85 after two more people tested positive. The two cases are a 35-year-old Kenyan male driver who entered the country through the Busia border and a Ugandan male from Masindi district.
