Patients at Awach Health center 1V in Gulu district are sharing latrines with staff at the health facility after the one meant for patients got filled-up.
Awach LC5 Councilor, Christopher Opiyo Ateker said the district authorities have already been informed about the lack of a useable latrine at the health centre.
Dr Cana Kenneth, the In- Charge of the facility said they are using a chemical which he did not name to reduce the level of waste in the filled-up pit latrine to prevent the sharing between medical staff and patients at the health centre.
“It is a challenge but because we don’t want to share[latrines] with our patients, we have resorted to using chemicals to see that the waste level is reduced,” Dr Cana said.
Dr Cana said the absence of a useable latrine for patients at has made the situation difficult at Awach Health Centre IV.
Opiyo Christopher Ateke, the councilor for Awach said the district authorities have already been informed about the situation at the health facility.
The Gulu district Chief Administrative Officer, Dorothy Ajwang confirmed that her office is aware of sanitary situation facing patients at Awach Health Centre.
Ajwang revealed that a contractor has been identified and that within one month Awach health centre will have a new latrine.
“As a district we have already identified a contractor and we expect that in a month’s time the latrine should be ready to help Awach health centre Patients” Ajwang said.
