At least three people died today morning after a bus they were travelling in knocked an elephant at 1 am at Dima village located along the Kiryandongo- Karuma road.
Among the dead was a driver and two passengers.
The SCANIA bus registration number UAM 80296 belonging to KKT was travelling from Arua to Kampala, overturned several times after knocking an elephant on the road.
Gerald Hakiza the Albertine region police spokesman blamed the accident on over speeding.
Police identified the dead as Aringanyira Musa(driver) from Fort Portal, Ondura Geoffery 37 from Lira, Bricirk Denis 20 from Arua while the injured have been as Komumahangi Agness Shira, Amatia Alex ,Asike Ronal ,Azunge Alain, Lamaleba Babaire , Aduku Abiba , Ethoma Pasko(a UPDF soldier) and his wife Emika Hilder, Morodo Rodger ,Nambwire Aisa Namorombo and Akello Sandra.
The injured are hospitalised at Kiryandongo hospital.
“Over speeding along the high way is a common problem for the drivers which has claimed lives,’’ Gerald Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesman said.
In 2012, several people were killed after a KK bus hit an elephant that was crossing the road at Got Apwoyo Sub County in Nwoya district causing it to overturn several times. In 2014, the same bus company was again involved in similar accident in Karuma.
