Amuru LCV Chairman has vowed to fight afforestation by stopping charcoal burning in the district.
In an interview with Acholi Times in Amuru, Michael Lakong, the Amuru LC5 Chairman said the district has halted issuing of license to anybody who wants to cut down trees on a large scale due to what he called the impunity manifested by people enagegd in charcoal burning.
Lakony rubbished claims of tribalism against him after he chased away from Amuru non-locals from other parts of the country who were engaged in charcoal burning and charcoal trade in the district.
According to Lakony, Amuru will not be able to fight poverty if the environment which is a critical source of livelihood is destroyed by what he termed profit minded people.
The new Amuru Chairman said for the two months he has been in office, he has found out that only two to three people were officially given licenses to cut down trees in a selected areas. But effectively July, the Chairman said, those licenses have now expired.
Last month violence erupted in Amuru over indiscriminate tree cutting especially in the areas of Pogo, Labala in Pabo Sub County, Okidi in Attiak and Guruguru in Lamogi Sub County.

I implore the other Acoli district chairmen to please, please, please follow Lakony’s example. Whatever cash you think you may get from this business you will get a thousand times from keeping the trees alive. Lakony, don’t listen to the likes of Naduli who is threatening to go to M7 over the expulsion of Luwero charcoal burners. This has nothing to do with tribalism. I will submit that it is Naduli himself who is being tribalistic, maybe he wants to continue whatever FEDEMU mission Kony interrupted in a different way.
