Journalists in Northern Uganda were last week gripped by the gruesome murder of one of their own.
The female journalist working with Favor Fm in Gulu was on Monday evening found dead in her house in Kolo quarters, Layibi division in Gulu district.
Ms Scovia Anena who was six months pregnant worked as a freelance news reporter for a year with the radio station.
The News Editor Favor Fm, Ms Caroline Ayugi in a statement on Northern Uganda Media Club (Numec) Google group announced her death saying, “There are indicators that Anena who was pregnant was killed by yet unknown people on Friday night.”
Ayugi said that she went to Anena’s house in Kolo quarters in Pece division at 7:30pm on Monday with police who opened the door that was padlocked and found her body with stab wounds and a rope tied around her neck.
“There were also things scattered around the room, a sign of a struggle with her killer/s who unfortunately, overpowered her.”
The police took her body to the mortuary on Monday evening for a postmortem.
Anena was buried at her parent’s home in Layibi division where the Media fraternity, family members and friends tearfully bid her farewell.
Pastor Tom Aziku Zata of the Life Line Ministries who led the burial service revealed that the deceased approached him to help solve a domestic problem she was facing.
Pastor Aziku however did not disclose to mourners what problem the deceased was faced with before her death.
“I was told that she spent the previous Sunday crying at church. I wish I had a chance to talk to her, maybe she would still be alive today,” He said.
Gulu District LCV Chairman, Mr Martin Ojara Mapenduzi asked anybody who has a clue on the cause of her death to come up and help in the investigations.
Gulu Municipality Mayor George Labeja promised to join other security personnel to stop the current rampant killings and insecurity in the municipality.
